Ardmore Studios Must Be Saved
26th November 2016

I attended and spoke at the public meeting held by the Ardmore Studios Workers last night.

I fully support the motion passed unanimously by the huge attendance at the meeting which effectively stated that the Government must not sell out the workers and the wider public by offloading their 33% stake in the Studios.

It is essential that the Government ensures its continued involvement in the success of the studios at a time when its future is under threat. There are real fears that the studios will be run down deliberately to create business for other rival studios in other parts of the country if the Government does not remain as a shareholder.

The Councillors in Bray and the entire County of Wicklow have already moved to close off any prospect of the site being developed for residential use by agreeing in principle to maintain a strict film use only zoning on the entire site. This proves the support of the local public representatives. However the same support must be shown by the 5 T.D.s representing the County. They must move immediately to demand a clear statement by the Government that the public interest will be secured and the state's stake will not be sold under any circumstances.

This is an opportunity for TDs to be relevant to the lives of the people they represent by actually achieving something significant for their constituents. The huge numbers of people attending the meeting last night will be extremely upset if they don't succeed.
