Lack of Gardai for Wicklow
27th April 2017

Shocking new figures show that County Wicklow received one of the lowest allocations of new Gardai in the entire country since 2014.

While our neighbouring counties of Kildare and Meath received 45 and 26 new recruits respectively, we received the sum total of 9 new Gardai.

Wexford was the recipient of 28 newly trained Gardai and even the lesser populated rural county of Westmeath got almost twice as many Gardai (17)as we did in County Wicklow.

It is a disgrace that our county with its location on the edge of the capital city and our mix of urban and rural population figured so little in the allocations of new Gardai. The people of County Wicklow who have been victims of crime or those who live in constant fear of their homes being burgled or of being attacked have been failed by this Government yet again.

I question the basis on which these allocations were made as there seems to be no logic to them and I call on the TDs in the constituency to raise this matter with the Minister for Justice immediately and seek to have a significant increase in Garda numbers in County Wicklow as a matter of urgency.
