Old Fassaroe Lands - More Ambition Needed
13th February 2018

Many local people and sports organisations will be shocked to learn that a majority of Councillors voted down my proposal to establish a public sports and recreation facility of 100 acres on the Old Fassaroe lands.

I believe that the least people could expect is a public facility which will cater for the sports and recreation needs of the future population of Bray Municipal District including the 10,000 people who will eventually live in this proposed new town.

This site comprises approx 400 acres of land and is owned by two major Irish companies - Roadstone and Cosgrave Brothers. The majority of the Councillors have rezoned vast sections of this land for residential development and this will hugely increase the monetary value of this land. Surely, we could have been more ambitious in our provision for the needs of the people we represent?

As it stands now, the paltry figure of 55 acres is zoned for active open space which will barely cater for the needs of the present sports organisations in the Municipal District never mind the needs of the people who will eventually live there. I believe this was a short sighted and unambitious decision by the Councillors who outvoted my proposal for 100 acres of sports and recreation facilities.

I will continue to campaign for proper public sports and recreation facilities on this land and I would encourage members of the public particularly those who are members of local sports organisations to continue to press for an ambitious public sports and recreation park available to all.
