Sport and Recreation Park for Fassaroe Stalled

Council Bends the Knee and agrees to stall Sports and Recreation Park in Fassaroe
4th April 2018

Sports and Community organisations in the Bray, Enniskerry and Kilmacanogue areas will be shocked to discover that the Chief Executive of Wicklow County Council has agreed to the request by Roadstone and Cosgrave Builders to alter the timetable of the provision of sports and community facilities in the new town of Fassaroe.

A majority of Councillors recently rejected my proposal to ensure there would be 100 acres of land available for sporting and community use by clubs and citizens. I was extremely disappointed at this short sighted decision because the Council was rezoning this land and making it extremely valuable for the landowners, Cosgraves and Roadstone.

The controlling majority of the Council mainly made up of Fianna Fail and Fine Gael Councillors along with a few associated allies voted to provide just over 50 acres of land for sports facilities but they did include a provision that the sports and community facilities should be built as part of the first phase of development, something which I would see as essential.

It now transpires that Cosgraves and Roadstone have made individual submissions on these changes. In his report on these submissions, the Chief Executive of the Council has now proposed that the sports facilities should now be delayed until Phase 2 and Phase 3 of the development. This means that these companies stand to make massive financial gains from what is essentially a rezoning of their lands and they are being allowed to stave off the provision of sports facilities until way off into the future.

I am now calling on the controlling majority of FF, FG and allied councillors to stand with me in rejecting this huge concession to these landowners.

I call on them to support the sports clubs and community organisations in the Bray, Enniskerry and Kilmacanogue areas by insisting that sports and community facilities are provided at the first phase of development in Fassaroe. This is a moment of truth for the Council and its commitment to properly planned development not only in Bray but elsewhere in the County.
